By the second half of 2013 information system for fare collection in KD Autotrolej Ltd. Rijeka was released/implemented and that was the first step of the Rijeka City Card project - first kind of City card project in Croatia.

KD Autotrolej introduced BusCARD system for electronic fare collection and traffic management, where vehicles are equipped with the latest generation of driver`s computers produced by Penta, card validators, communication computers, passenger counters, controllers got rugged handheld computers, transportation center was equipped with wall LCD panel and selling points with other neccessary equipment. Software was developed by team of Penta programmers: support for traffic management and control, fare collection and card control, planning and timetables design, drivers and vehicles schedules.

Rijeka City Card project is unique product in Croatia, but in the region too. It is a multi-purpose card that facilitates citizens of Rijeka everyday life, saving their time and money, and enables faster realization rights for city services use.

Only one card is neccessary to use public services like driving with KD Autotrolej buses, parking at Rijeka Promet parking places, borrowing books from the city`s library, but card has also payment functionality (credit card) so You can make purchases at stores that accept Diners cards. Techical specification of card as a medium shows that it`s based on contactless NXP - Mifare technology, with triple protection from fraud (floating key, encrypted sector structure, dynamic sector content control).

There are three main card type: prepaid (card of right/value), credit card (card of right/credit) and companion (card of right/debit).

In the forthcoming period, other urban societies such as Ivan pl. Zajc, Rijeka City Puppet Theatre, Sport facilities Rijeka, Natural History Museum, the Maritime Museum and the Museum of City Rijeka are expected to be included in City Card project.

Introduction of the city card removes the need for the user going to the individual selling points, given that the city card can be "recharged",  or You can "buy" services rights on newsstands, via the Internet, at ATMs and other selling points, including selling points of KD Autotrolej.
