Completion of the project "Strengthening the transport system" and presentation of the passenger information system in Rijeka
On December 12, the final conference of the EU project "Strengthening the transport system" was held, where the implementation of the final part of the project was presented, namely the delivery of displays for announcing the arrival of buses at KD Autotrolej bus stops. There are 48 displays announcing the arrival of buses at bus stops that were delivered and put into operation by PENTA and which are distributed in the area of the city of Rijeka, a total of 36, while one was installed in the area of Kraljevica, Klan, Kostrena, Čavle, Kastav, Lovran and Moščenićka Draga. There are three displays in the area of Opatija, while two displays have been installed in the area of Viškovo.
Information at the stops is carried out with 32'' and 55'' LCDs, the dimensions of which guarantee good visibility, readability and comprehensibility of information, as well as the multimodality of the solution, i.e. the possibility of presentations and other contents of the Autotrolej for its users. The complete information system implemented by PENTA in the area of the city of Rijeka and its surroundings, based on automatically obtained information about the current georeferenced position of each bus, calculates the planned arrival time at the bus stop and transmits this information to the information displays at the bus stops. The software support of the system includes an API, an application for managing information displays, a back office application and a reporting system, prediction of the arrival of public transport vehicles, a web portal and a mobile application for informing passengers. The project also delivered related equipment for the traffic centre, communication equipment for the connection between the traffic centre and the external network of variable signs, the necessary equipment in buses, information displays at bus stops, and equipment in the server centre.
With the installed displays that provide passengers with real-time information about bus arrivals, routes and delays, Rijeka's public transport has been modernized, and the uncertain wait for the bus will no longer be a daily problem for many citizens. It is not strange that citizens do not like delays and disruptions in the functioning of traffic, and through the information system (way, time, place), they value the quality of the entire transport service, which is also proof of how much information system is actually needed and how much users personally experience it. The goals of the EU project "Strengthening the public transport system" are to improve capacity and increase the speed of travel, reduce operational costs, improve the reliability and safety of transport, reduce the emission of harmful gases and air pollution, increase the number of passengers in public transport compared to private vehicles, and adapt to EU standards introduction of modern passenger notification systems.
